How to Choose Coffee Beans: A Saudi Coffee Lover's Buying Guide
Standing in front of a wall of coffee bags can feel like a test you didn't study for. Origins, roast levels, tasting notes, strange words like "washed" and "natural". If you've ever wondered how to choose coffee beans without guessing, you're not alone. The good news: you only need to check five things. Once you know them, every bag starts to make sense.
1. Start with the roast date, not the expiry date
Coffee is a fresh product. Flavour peaks in the weeks after roasting, then fades slowly. A bag with only a distant "best before" date tells you very little. A roast date tells you everything.
As a simple rule, look for beans roasted within the last few weeks. In Saudi heat, freshness matters even more, because warm kitchens and long delivery times speed up staling. Buy from a roaster who roasts in small batches and ships quickly, and ask when your bag was roasted. A good roaster will be happy to tell you.
2. Choose your roast level by how you like to drink coffee
Roast level shapes the cup more than most people expect.
Light roast
Bright, fruity, floral, tea-like. Light roasts let the bean's origin speak. They shine in filter coffee such as V60 and are what many specialty drinkers reach for.
Medium roast
Balanced and sweet, with notes of chocolate, caramel and nuts. This is the safest starting point if you're new to specialty coffee, and it works across most brew methods.
Dark roast
Bold, roasty, lower acidity. Good for people who like a heavier cup, or who drink their coffee with milk. If you want to go deeper, read our guide to roast levels.
Not sure? Start medium. Move lighter if you want more brightness, darker if you want more weight.
3. Let the origin guide your flavour
Where a coffee grows changes how it tastes. You don't need to memorise the map. Just learn a few anchors:
Ethiopia is known for floral, citrusy, tea-like cups. Colombia tends toward sweet, balanced profiles with caramel and fruit. Brazil often delivers nutty, chocolatey, low-acid coffee that is easy to love. Yemen, where coffee's story in our region began, offers wild, complex, spiced character.
If you enjoy fruity and bright, look to East Africa. If you want comfort and sweetness, try Latin America. Origin is your shortcut to flavour.
4. Read the tasting notes, then trust your tongue
Tasting notes like "blueberry", "jasmine" or "dark chocolate" are not added flavours. They describe what experienced tasters find in the cup. Use them as a compass, not a promise. If you like chocolate and nuts, pick a bag with those words. If you like something lively and fruity, look for berries, citrus or stone fruit.
A small tip: keep notes. After each bag, write down what you liked. In a few bags you'll know your own taste better than any label can tell you.
5. Match the beans to your brew method
The best bag for you depends on how you brew.
Espresso usually works best with medium to medium-dark roasts that give sweetness and body. Filter coffee such as V60 or batch brew lets lighter roasts show their clarity. French press and moka pot like medium roasts with body and richness. Cold brew loves medium to dark profiles with chocolate and caramel notes, which stay smooth when chilled.
Many roasters label beans as "espresso" or "filter". These labels are suggestions. Plenty of people enjoy a filter roast as espresso, and the reverse. Brew what you enjoy.
Whole beans or ground?
Whole beans, whenever you can. Once coffee is ground, it loses aroma quickly. A simple grinder is one of the best upgrades you can make. If you don't have one, ask your roaster to grind for your specific method, and use the coffee within a couple of weeks. Our grind size guide will help you dial it in at home.
One thing to ignore: "100% Arabica" as a quality claim
Almost all specialty coffee is Arabica, so the label alone doesn't tell you much. Look instead for traceable information: the country or farm, the process, the roast date, and a roaster who is open about where the coffee comes from. Transparency is the real sign of quality.
A simple checklist before you buy
Is there a roast date? Does the roast level match how you drink coffee? Do you like the flavour of this origin? Do the tasting notes sound like you? Does it suit your brew method? If you can answer yes to most, you've found a good bag.
Store it well
Even the best beans suffer in a bad spot. Keep them in an airtight container, away from sunlight and heat. Skip the fridge. Our guide to storing coffee beans covers it step by step.
